This summary sets out the key points discussed at the February 22, 2024 meeting.

General items

  • The committee discussed the process of reporting to FSRA plan members over age 71 and what to do with the related contributions. The committee also discussed best practices with respect to missing members.

Defined Benefit MEPP leading practice benchmarking

  • FSRA updated the committee on its progress to date with respect to individual plan reports as well as the broader benchmarking report.

Target benefit framework

  • Ontario Ministry of Finance updated the committee on the most recent work towards a target benefit framework. The committee and Ministry discussed the issue of annuities purchased by MEPPs.

Member-Focused work

  • FSRA discussed with the committee the successes of the most recent Pension Awareness Day including multi-cultural outreach and discussions in media, as well as participation from the Minister of Finance.

Guidance updates

  • FSRA and the committee discussed upcoming pension-specific guidance related to plan amendments and guidance on roles and responsibilities.

FSRA priorities

  • FSRA provided an update to the committee on its ongoing and upcoming work on sector priorities.

FSRA exchange

  • FSRA gave the committee a sneak peek at March’s FSRA Exchange and that the Pensions group would break out to discuss principles-based regulation.

Vulnerable consumers

  • FSRA provided an update to the committee on its work to support vulnerable consumers and its relevance to pension plan members.

Next meeting

The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Summer 2024.
