Ad Hoc Technical Advisory Committee for Family Law Pension Matters

This summary sets out the key points discussed at the September 25, 2020 teleconference.
Working Group Discussions
Working Group 3, focusing on valuation matters, met on September 16, 2020. Feedback received from this working group was presented and discussed at the September 25, 2020 Committee meeting.
The Committee discussed issues related to the preliminary value calculation and considered options to address those issues.
FSRA will use feedback from the Committee to develop an education document geared to members and their spouses to provide them with a general overview of how the pension asset is treated in a marriage breakdown. FSRA will also develop a technical Guidance document for pension plan administrators and practitioners who specialize in family law matters.
The Committee’s final meeting will be held on November 26, 2020.
Next Steps
The next meeting of the Committee is scheduled for October 30, 2020, to discuss the draft documents described above.
